Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur & Pebble Beach

Monterey

Just 80 miles south of San Francisco, with a temperate climate year round, Monterey is the largest city on its namesake peninsula. It’s rich in visitor attractions including the Monterey Bay Aquarium with its three storey marine habitat tank and the Splash Zone filled with penguins, sea dragons and super sized scallop and clam shells.

Kayaking, scuba diving, surfing, whale watching and beach-going are just some of the activities to be enjoyed in and around Monterey. Golf, shopping, and driving the spectacular coastline to Big Sur are a few of the many land-based adventures.

The visitor hub is Cannery Row, historic warehouses from its sardine export era are filled with galleries, restaurants and other entertainment venues. Monterey is a treasure trove of history. The Path of History, marked by tiles on the pavements, leads travellers along a route filled with 19th century adobes, historic homes and churches. Head to Fisherman’s Wharf to see Monterey’s seafaring past brought to life.

Carmel

Located 120 miles south of San Francisco on the Pacific coast in Monterey County, Carmel is known for its quaint cottages and shops, restaurants and artsy boutiques.

The quaint seaside town of Carmel-by-the-Sea is filled with picture postcard cottages dating back to 1902 and cypress trees, planted at the turn of the 20th century to enhance the landscape. Once a bohemian haven, a mecca for artists and a refuge for writers its inspirational attraction is still clearly evident today. Visit Ocean Avenue, the heart of Carmel’s shopping district, lined with specialty shops, restaurants, art galleries and antique stores.

Lying 12 miles away from the coast is Carmel Valley, lovingly known as the sunbelt of the Monterey Peninsula for averaging 283 sunny days each year. Its rolling ranch land, bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, offers the perfect climate for its lush vineyards and encourages hiking, biking and picnicking by those who visit. A range of resort-style hotels specialise in golfing and exceptional spa treatments.

Just for your information…. Clint Eastwood was the former Mayor of Carmel!

Big Sur

Big Sur is located along Scenic Highway One approximately 150 miles south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. Historically, the name Big Sur was derived from that unexplored and unmapped wilderness area that lies along the coast south of Monterey. It was simply called elpaís grande del sur, the Big South Country.

Today, Big Sur refers to the 90-mile stretch of rugged and beautiful coastline between Carmel to the north and San Simeon to the south. Highway One winds along its length and is flanked on one side by the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains and on the other by the rocky Pacific Coast.

There is no downtown – only miles of staggeringly beautiful coastline, ocean cliffs, steep ridges, jagged peaks, deep gorges, flowing rivers and a population of approximately 1,000 residents.

Pebble Beach

Legendary Pebble Beach located between Monterey and Carmel is renowned for its four golf courses and stunning coastal scenery. Combine a dramatic coastline and mystical forest with a rich history of world-class accommodations, warm hospitality, expert service and grand recreation. Perhaps nowhere else on the planet does this combination come together quite like Pebble Beach.

As an avid golfer be sure to play the Pebble Beach Golf Links considered the greatest public golf course in America. Spyglass Hill Golf Course is rated one of the toughest courses in the world and the Links at Spanish Bay offer a true Scottish game. Even if you are not a golfer you can’t help but appreciate the beauty of the coastal scenery. Head to the road and take 17 Mile Drive. The stunning landscape where you will see beautiful beaches, wildlife such as seals and sea lions, the famed Lone Cypress and astounding mansions.
