Drumheller & Medicine Hat

Drumheller

Drumheller in the heart of the Canadian Badlands is located 68 miles northeast of Calgary in the Red Deer River valley (often referred to as Dinosaur Valley). Unique sandstone formations, called the Hoodoos, dot the Drumheller valley. These naturally eroded land formations, some of which stand 20 feet tall, were naturally carved out by wind and water over millions of years into pillar-like shapes. Take a 10 minute drive to Horsethief Canyon where the views and scenery are just breath-taking.

Drumheller is home to the world’s largest dinosaur which weighs 65 tons and stands at 86ft tall! Climb the 106 steps up to the mouth of the tyrannosaurus rex and discover fantastic views of the valley from the mouth of the dinosaur. The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller houses hundreds of thousands of dinosaur artefacts from around the world.

Located on the Dinosaur Trail, just 16 km (10 mi) northwest of Drumheller on the east bank of the Red Deer River, Horsethief Canyon is a must-see while exploring the Canadian Badlands. Stand on the edge for spectacular views of the valley below. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike down the steep trail and explore the canyon that is named after the outlaws who hid their stolen livestock here more than 100 years ago.

A trip to Drumheller is not complete until you visit the 117 meter Rosedale Swinging Bridge which stretches over the Red Deer River. Along the bridge, plaques indicate the historical importance of this bridge during the mining era.

Have your camera ready as you walk over the beautiful River to capture Drumheller’s otherworldly landscapes.
